PHOTOGRAPHERS

Thanks for your interest in creating Passages cards with us. The fact that you connected with the line in the first place – and then made the time and effort to learn more about our submission process – tells us you may well have images we'd like to see. Welcome!

We look for ...

photos that inspire us to write! Granted, that’s a very subjective quality, but look through the current line and you’ll get some sense of how our imagery generally establishes very tangible moods. The photos pull a person in … down a road, off a dock, into the lushness of a flower. And – very importantly – they serve to jump-start the text.

We pay ...

independent photographers the same royalty-free rate we pay stock agencies for the use of their images, $100 per image.

To submit images ...

Select from two-10 images you believe would complement the current Passages collection.
Scan/save them as lo-res files to be used for comping purposes only. Please do not send high-res images as (1) we cannot accept the liability for holding publishable images and (2) the lo-res will download more quickly. (Do be sure you have the image in high-res, however, because that will be needed if the image is to be published on Passages.)
Name the images with your own last name, followed by a working title or image number (i.e., stevensblacklab.tif)
E-mail images to submissions@cardthartic.com

We’ll review your submission with an eye for images that prompt us to say something we feel needs to be said, and that fit into a category we’re trying to fill. Just so you know, all too often we may consider an image spectacular and yet have to "reject" it for reasons like it not fitting the categories we’re creating for at the time, or perhaps we’ve already published a photo that captures the same subject from another perspective (i.e. we already have lots of water, clouds, sunsets and trees).

We’ll e-mail you back within days letting you know whether or not we’ve seen images that we believe are a good match with Passages. If we have, we’ll let you know we’ve created a folder in your name in our Potential Image Library, and just which of your images will be housed there for future consideration.

If /when we see a spot for an image of yours as we grow the Passages line, we’ll e-mail you again at that time to confirm that you still wish to have the image published on a Passages card. Please note, this may be days, months or years from your initial submission … again, it just depends on the categories we need to fill with any given release. If/when we e-mail you confirming your continued interest, we’ll also ask you to e-mail the image directly to our color separator as a roughly four-inch-per-side image (around 5-6 MB) at 300 dpi in TIFF (not JPG) format in CMYK (not RGB). We’ll also ask how you wish to be credited on the card back, what title you might like to give your image, and where it was taken so we can note the location for consumers who are interested. This is also the time we’ll ask you to please invoice us $100 per published image, and give you a P.O. number to reference as you do.

Timing ...

We welcome submissions throughout the year as we are always working on new designs. We currently do four new Passages releases a year -- Spring, Summer, Christmas, Valentines – beginning production on each up to nine months in advance. Passages photographers tell us our turn-around time is fairly fast for the industry, so if you sell us rights to an image of yours, you'll likely see it printed on a Passages card three to four months later.

Next steps ...

If being part of Passages still interests you, do your pull and send them on. In any event, thanks for being the sort of high-spirited person who would let Passages find you. We look forward to seeing just what you might have to share with the world!

WRITERS

Thanks for your interest in creating Passages cards with us. The fact that you connected with the line in the first place -- and then made the time and effort to learn more about our submission process -- tells us you may well have writing we'd like to see. Welcome!

We look for ...

messages that move us, mainly because they ring so true. We also need messages whose intent and purpose are very clear … we want it to be immediately obvious why and to whom a person would send one of our cards. Passages fans often tell us that what they love most about the line is how “REAL” the words sound … and we love to tell them that’s because they are! The card texts we publish generally begin as notes or messages sent between friends, lovers and family members. Sometimes the messages began as the perfectly soothing thing someone wrote in a sympathy card to a person they’ve never met … but they know that, if they shared the words with us, we’d share them with the world. So that’s what we look for in Passages cards – real life messages.

We pay ...

in pure satisfaction and credit on the card back – which apparently means a lot to some people. Because all the Passages messages we’ve published to date have come from things that Cardthartic friends and family have written and said to each other, we’ve never before paid for text. We’ve put together these guidelines especially for people like you who have expressed an interest in expressing themselves through Passages.

To submit messages ...

Select from messages you’ve written or spoken that really seemed to do the trick at the time.
Type them in a Word document headed with your name, e-mail address, mailing address, daytime telephone number and submission date.
Namethe document using your last name and your submission date (i.e., stevens010402)
E-mail the document as an attachment to submissions@cardthartic.com

We’ll review your submission with the goal of reading something we feel needs to be said, in a fresh and caring way. And that fits into a category we are or will be trying to fill! Just so you know, all too often we may consider a message incredible and yet have to "reject" it for reasons like it not fitting the categories we’re creating for at the time, or perhaps we’ve already published text that sounds not exactly but quite-like the submission.

We’ll let you know within days whether or not we’ve found messages that we believe have Passages potential. If we have, we’ll let you know we’ve created a folder in your name in our Potential Text Library, and just which messages will be housed there for ongoing consideration.

If /when we see a spot for a message of yours as we grow the Passages line, we’ll e-mail you to confirm that you still wish to have the message published on a Passages card. You may hear from us within days, months or years … again, it just depends on the categories we need to fill with any given release. In this e-mail, we’ll ask you how you wish to be credited on the card back, and to whom you might like to dedicate the card.
