Since we released this design nearly a decade ago, it's been one of the most popular we've ever made. The card came to be because ~ while my Mom was alive ~ she would lobby hard for "more humor!" in our PASSAGES line. When I saw this stock image, I thought immediately of Mom and her cronies ~ all in their eighties ~ as wise and with-it as anyone. This message actually sounds like Mom, proud almost to the point of arrogance about being, "Old but cute!"

I was initially drawn to this image taken by Patience Taylor, because the Black Lab reminded me so much of my own. I wrote the message back in 2002 when Lucia was still alive, basing it on (a) how bella Lucia spent her day and (b) hearing my friend Joseph watch me pamper that pooch then tease that he wished he were my dog!

When I saw this shy lion, I knew immediately what the front of the card would say, but the inside stumped me. When my personal assistant at the time read where I was headed, Lynda Barry coyly cocked her head and immediately said, "but you hide them so well!" And, with an admiring sigh, Lyn dedicated the card to her well-preserved elderly neighbor, "Marya."

Before publishing this image, we cautiously asked at least a dozen cat fanciers if they thought the kitty could have been harmed in the making of the photo … "Heck no!" was more often than not the reponse. "That's Exactly something my crazy cat would be up to!" came the consistent answer. I pretty much penned the message based on catty feedback like that!

When I first saw this stock image back in 2002, the message (along with a number of childhood friends) came immediately to mind. But when our printer's great production assistant saw it, she gently insisted we dedicate the design to HER girlhood side-kick. Since Angie is the sort of pro you always want by your side, we were happy to oblidge. You'll find the dedication on the card back reads, "Message from Angie Hawkins for Suzie Bloomfield."
