I wrote this message when my old friend, Tom Calhoun was sadly mourning the loss of his beloved Akita, "Nikko." It’s with mixed emotions that we see this Pet Condolence card always among the top 10 of our entire 250-plus Passages designs. We naturally feel sad that the demand for this card is so high, but also very glad that this design is obviously meeting an important need.

I wrote this message based on how loved my black Lab Lucia made me feel. So it was touching to receive this card from my friend Jack Kraft following Lucia's death in '08. Yes, Lucia was a dog and, yes, it's a cat that's pictured. But this just goes to show it's the thought that counts; in the card Jack wrote, "I sure wish I didn't have to send this to you now, but I have always loved this card, and I know how you loved Lucia." Thanks, Jack. Indeed.

This has been a powerful and popular pet condolence design since 1998. What can I tell you … I saw that sundial and, sadly, thought it a perfect pet resting place. Bruce Andre took the image, and the text was inspired by my upstairs' neighbor at the time, Bernard Furmansky. He and "Norton," the third beloved pomeranian in his series, taught me pets ARE family. The card back carries the sweetly corny New Yorker's dedication to Norton's pom predecessors, "Remembering Ralph & Alice."

The message for this pet condolence card came to me as I was sitting in the vet’s examining room with my undeniably dear dog, Lucia, who passed away in May 08. While she and I were waiting for Dr. Siegel, I knew that in the next room he was sadly putting someone's beloved cat down -- the woman’s cry we heard was honestly the most heart-wrenching sound I have ever heard. I looked down at Lucia, and she up at me, and to my mind came something Rebecca-the-World’s-Greatest-Therapist once advised me: “Loved ones may be in our lives for five seconds, five years or five decades ... we never know, so just make the most of every moment you’re given.”
