The message originated as a note written to Margaret James (my personal assistant back in 2002) by her daughter Devon. With Margaret's permission, I paired the message with this image because Margaret took more pleasure in, and sent and received flowers more than anyone I had ever known until then or since.

This single black-eyed susan has always cheered me. It's little and simple and yet striking in its way. Seeing it made me consider how often I've tried to thank someone for making a difference in my life, only to hear, "Don't be ridiculous ~ it was nothing!" To me, it was something. My hope for this card is that it will somehow help put it all in perspective for people who downplay their own kind gestures.

This message I wrote for Cardthartic's first employee (besides me), Robb Anderson. I could tell many stories about Robb "being so good to me," but my favorite is from about 1996 when we didn't know if the company would make it or not. Off the payroll, I took up freelance speech writing at night (so to put nice big checks into Cardthartic by day) while Robb sous-cheffed for a caterer. Every night around 8 I'd get the call from my doorman, "Robb's just left you a bag that smells Great!"

When I first saw John C. Lin's tiny flower in the big evergreens, I somehow thought it worked perfectly for a message I wanted to write for Dave Avery. A very thoughtful and creative Chicago friend, he knew back in 1996 I was having a tough time keeping the company afloat. And that I was losing my everlasting optimism. I opened my door one evening to find Dave standing there holding a scrabble board on which he'd managed to lay out every positive word the board would hold. A little thing ... that meant a lot.

This message was inspired by Chicago therapist Rebecca Pillsbury, who nurtured my personal growth for years. Among Rebecca's many gifts are her metaphors, the ability to put things in very relatable terms. People are like plants, she once suggested. You wouldn't want to drench one that needs very little water, or keep another in the shade when it thrives on full sun. Ask and observe what it is that your loved ones truly need, and give them that. And be sure to let them know what makes you bloom.
