Photographer Randy Wells spotted this heart and garland on a doorway in Germany's Rhine River Valley. My message stemmed from growing up in
a small Midwestern town where every family knew every other, so losses were widely felt.

I wrote this message based on how strongly I felt "the spirit of the person" when each of my parents died. It was so clear to me that 'Mom' and 'Dad' had just left empty shells behind. It seemed they were no longer contained by bodies that had worn out and held them back -- they were now 'everywhere' and joyfully free.

Photographer Andrea Wells spotted this starfish on Maui, Hawaii. I saw it and wrote the message because it reminded me of The Starfish Story... A child was tossing beached starfish back into the sea so they would live. Along came a man who pointed out to her that there were thousands of beached starfish in the world, "You cannot possibly make a difference." As she tossed another living starfish back into the sea, the little girl said, "I made a difference to that one."

This humble message is one that my cousin, Bonnie Christman, said she'd penned in hundreds of condolence cards over the years ... Bonnie had written it so many times and it had been so well received that she finally and very graciously suggested we publish it. And, she sweetly asked that the dedication on this card back read, "With love to Linda Tanous in memory of Steve."

This card came to be when my friend and then neighbor, Rick Grossbohlin, learned his step-father had passed away after a long illness. When I tried to console Rick he literally said, "Ah, well, we knew this day would come," and I truly responded just as the card says, "but that makes it no less difficult." The dedication Rick wrote and we printed on the card's back reads, "In Loving Memory of Louie Valerio."

I was writing to this lovely photograph by Debra Hershkowitz one day when my friend Lois Foster stopped by. Because I'd gotten only as far as the card's cover message, I asked Lois for her input. She read it, instinctively put her hand to her heart, and said as if to herself, "... and more than hearts should have to feel." Lois dedicated the powerful card that resulted to her beloved late sister, Laurie Gardner. In 2008, Lois & Laurie's card won the greeting card industry's "Superbly Stated" award.

Cardthartic's first photographer, Larry Kanfer, featured this image in his art book, Prairiescapes. It was Chicago's legendary ad man Bernie Pitzel who wrote the message for and dedicated it on the card back to his late grandmother, Luigia Romani.
